Orang Utan Island (Bukit Merah)
We went to Bukit Merah Laketown quite some time ago. The resort is only a 3 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur and easily reached just off the Bukit Merah toll exit along the North-South Expressway.
We like the Orang Utan Island the best.
The island is the world's first orang hutan conservation and rehabilitation centre.
The resort was set up as an orang utan sanctuary to educate, research on and better understand this protected species.
We got the chance to observe their behaviour up close and personal, as we were taken through a 100-metre steel-cage tunnel. We took a 10-minute boat ride from the main jetty at Marina Village.
Tucked away in this 7,000-acre lake, the Orang Utan Island serves as a breeding ground, as well as a research and education center.
The Infant Care Unit (ICU) is a breeding unit specifically-designed to encourage the increase in population of the orang utans, providing them with veterinary care and to ensure that are able to eventually adapt to their natural habitat and have a higher survival rate as a result.
Veterinary care for the Orang Utan infant, due to improper maternal care.
It can eventually adapt to the natural environment and has a higher survival rate.
What a great place to help the magnificent orangatans.
