Silk

We visited the silk factory and we were given a brief account about the silk-making and also a demonstration of making the silk comforter.

Cocoons

The cocoon is made of a thread of raw silk from 300 to about 900 meters (1,000 to 3,000 feet) long.

The fibers are very fine and lustrous.

Silkworm

The silkworm is the larva or caterpillar of the domesticated silkmoth.

It is an important economic insect since it is the producer of silk.

A silkworm's preferred food is white mulberry leaves.

It is entirely dependent on humans for its reproduction and no longer occurs naturally in the wild.

In China, there is a legend that the discovery of the silkworm's silk was by an ancient empress called Xi Ling-Shi. She was drinking tea under a tree when a silk cocoon fell into her tea. She picked it out and started to wrap the silk thread around her finger, she slowly felt a warm sensation. When the silk ran out, she saw a small larva. In an instant, she realized that this caterpiller larva was the source of the silk.

Well, I showed interesting about the making of the comforter and immediately, the salesgirl urged me to get the comforter at a special price.

But, I was hesitant and finally, I didn't buy it.

Personally, I like to feel easy and decide to buy it on my own free will rather than to be pressured in the purchase of any items.

What about you? Are you easily influenced by any salesperson?

  1. Lovely story about silkworms. I don't like to be pressured into anything, especially shopping. I have learned to say No Thank you politely.
Thank you, Dear Wenn for sharing your travels.

  2. Last week there was a TV program talking about the reason of the high expense of women silk underclothing in Germany. So the program brought me back to the silk town Hangzhou to learn how the silk is produced from the little worms.
I usually have no problem to say NO to sales people, but find it hard to not to buy beautiful things!

  3. Did you eat the grub of the silk worm, some where I read, people eat them.

Could be quite an exotic food after they boiled the silk out.

  4. Would you believe I fially found out what the large tree in the corner of the back yard is? And it's a Mulberry tree. It has some type of berry on it.
Very interesting about the silkworms, the sroty of the empress is a nice one.

I also don't like being pressured into buying something and it works in the opposite way to that intended by the sales person.

Thanks for visiting my "FF&F" blog and your kind comments, they're always appreciated.
    Enjoy your weekend.
    Cheers.

  9. Nice interesting story and facts about cocoon & silk. Nope I am usually not easily influenced. I always remember this ~ "buy things that you need & not what you like". Also while on tours I prefer to travel light & if I know I can buy them back home even at a higher price I opt not to buy overseas as carrying big bulky items is cumbersome. Thanks.
