Orang Utan Island (Bukit Merah)
We went to Bukit Merah Laketown quite some time ago. The resort is only a 3 hours drive from Kuala Lumpur and easily reached just off the Bukit Merah toll exit along the North-South Expressway. We like the Orang Utan Island the best. The island is the world's first orang hutan conservation and rehabilitation centre. The resort was set up as an orang utan sanctuary to educate, research on and better understand this protected species. We got the chance to observe their behaviour up close and personal, as we were taken through a 100-metre steel-cage tunnel. We took a 10-minute boat ride from the main jetty at Marina Village. An island dedicated to the preservation of this endangered primates.
