To lend or not

A salesperson became close to the boss and he even called him 'Godfather'. I couldn't be bothered as I wouldn't agree being the godmother.
Anyway, he is getting married soon. Formerly, he told the boss that he came from a rich family and even his wife's family are rich. Good to hear that but something confused the boss.

That guy messaged the boss asking him for help. He needs monetary help as he needs money for his marriage preparation.

Yesterday, the boss looked at me with his somewhat worried look. He asked me for help in replying to his message. He showed me the message. It clearly shows that the guy is really in need of help.

I told the boss that he needn't have to help him if he couldn't trust him in repaying back.

That's the thing: Money spoil the friendship!

Would you care to help a friend in need of money knowing that he/she wouldn't be able to pay back the money?

  1. Hello Wenn,

It really depends on whether it is a big sum or not and how good a friend he is. For siblings, I don't mind lending knowing that it will not be returned. For friends, must be very very good friends but small amount is ok. But only once. Not again and again.

    Have a nice day!

  2. Good morning Wenn.

I try to avoid borrowing and lending money as like you said, money spoiled friendship. Never mix money with friends.

Maybe your boss can confront this guy and ask directly. I think the way he asked via message is not good too.

  3. How come he did not come to the boss and talk to him directly?

  4. It depends on the amount and whether I can afford to write off the amount in the event that he/she doesn't pays back.

  5. Oh this is very hard to explain.

  6. Since your hubby gave you one kind of look does it means the amount is huge?

    1. Since he is worried then he must give an excuse not to lend his "godson" money then. But if didn't so, later psoil friendship pula.

    1. I know he can't pay me bec but still I lend my friend money that time. We are friend since Form6, so I wanna help him when he have problem. He even promised me to pay me back little by little. I remembered he paid me bec once RM800 only and left the balance until now. If we decided to lend them money then, any consequences we have to take it. No regret!

  8. Depends.

If he/she is someone very close and I know the real situation, maybe yes.

Just a passing relationship, with no strong bonds, I'd hesitate

  9. Susah nak cakap... depends on circumstances... but if lend, never expect the money to be returned.. asking back money is like borrowing money...

  10. well this will be a tough situation and always have to depend on how much and how close you are with the person, and most importantly how trustworthy that person is.. and also you have to consider your ability to lend the money, ah, lots of things to consider indeed..

    1. if just a salesperson and only a business partner relationship, i think i will not help him.. everyone can compose very good message on how urgent the need is, just have to ignore the situation but put the factors above in mind first..

    1. Well to me, it depends on how close we are, if very close and though I know he won't pay back, I'll still borrow but not full amount la, just a part of it, better than not helping at all ma!

But the saying is true, 'money spoil the friendship!'

  15. I never like to borrow money to friend or relatives. Money are evil. They really spoil the relationships. But i once lend money to a friend. We knew each other since college. As it was a small amount, i gave it to him knowing he won't pay back because of his fake promise.
