First of August

I quit teaching and I help my husband in the shop since 1 March 2008. It all happened because my BIL had decided to open his own shop somewhere else. My husband bought over his share and so he is the sole proprietor of the shop. He told me that I were to just help at the counter. That means handling the cash. That's fine with me.

But it was not smooth sailing. My husband is very stressed as I was not able to help him in handling the chinese medical stuff. Mind you, I was not even chinese educated. But I tried my best. In year 2008, I was actually still on unpaid leave. I could easily leave the shop and go back to school. But I don't know why I hesitated and carried on till finally I left teaching for good in 2009.

So in March 2009, I was given a salary. Well, since I accepted that, I became an employee and definitely I had to work accordingly. I had to go to work on time. Sometimes, I could be late and the boss didn't like it. As a boss, he's entitled to scold but I couldn't take it.

I always wanted to quit from work but I didn't have the heart to do so. Deep inside, I know he needed me so I stayed put.

At the end of March this year, I was late to work. Frankly speaking, I was at a store looking for cards to be given to my customers who participated in the 'I love my pet' contest. He called me but my phone was in the car.

When I reached the shop, he was angry that I didn't answer his call and started scolding. I knew I was wrong so I kept quiet.

But deep inside me, I was not happy with the way he treated me. So I wrote a letter of resignation with effect from 1 April. But I will still be helping him at the shop. Not as an employee but as a free worker.

Since then, I realised that he's trying real hard to control his temper. I was thinking to myself. I could just leave the shop for good. Anyway, it has been 4 months and I feel good. He hasn't scolded much since then.

So there's a lot of difference being an employee and a free worker. I don't get salary since April but thankfully he still remembers to give me some pocket money.

  1. It's great of you to continue helping out for free. Running a store can be very stressful; for us, it was a lack of foot traffic coming into the store that started driving down profits and putting us all on edge. After reorganizing some new management and purchasing led signs for the storefront, everything is under control again. Best of luck to you with your shop, and your blog! I always love reading about your experiences.

  3. You made me laugh so much as you are so honest and transparent! It is not easy to find a tolerant and understanding wife these days. Other female monsters would have thrown her slippers or ketchup bottle at your husband and storm out. Your husband needs to cool down otherwise his blood pressure will go up.

  4. My wife hates teaching yet she took a degree in Education. Now she still has to teach in order to get her Masters. I will tell her that you would prefer teaching than be a Taukeh soh.

  6. You really did take a risk by quitting your teaching job and showed your faith in your husband. He is obviously under a lot of stress and at times like those, the loved ones get the brunt of it. I'm so sorry. I hope things ease up a bit.

  11. Good morning Wenn,

Thank you for sharing with us the ups and downs of being a TaukeSoh. Ya, not easy to help out a loved ones and then have to be scolded but you did well to manage the situation and thought of a solution by being a free worker. Kudos to you.

  18. You are an integral part of the shop, Wenn?

Not as an employee, but I think more of a partner. A partner in life and a partner at work. Nothing beats that.
